The Beautiful and the Good
In Ancient Greek culture, there was a concept that perfectly described the character of their heroes: καλοκαγαθία.
Though untranslatable, it was conceived as the combination of distinct virtues, which roughly correspond to the terms “beautiful” (καλὸς) and “good” (ἀγαθός) or, most commonly, as the intersection of the two of them. In such a human being, body and mind collaborate because internal conflicts have been overcome.
Broadly speaking, we think that, also in modern times, there is a strong link between these two properties. What is beautiful could not fail to be good, and what is good is necessarily beautiful.
